Across the ten tracks Calum channels musical greats such as John Mayer, Jimi Hendrix, John Martyn, Mark Knopfler and Peter Gabriel, showcasing his range and versatility. At the forefront of it all is his innate knack for candid storytelling inspired by love for travelling and good conversation with people from all walks of life.
âThe album is truly a glimpse into my life, my feelings, my relationships and my love of music, all kinds of musicâ Calum explains, âto me itâs so important to use as many influences that grab your heart as possible.â
âThe Manâ unapologetically traverses between genres. From foot stomping funk and blues to world music, folk and pop, Calum refuses to be placed in a box. On blues-inspired songs such as âShow Me The Wayâ and âBurn It Downâ his rock-cello skills come to the fore, whilst the slower moments on the project reveal Calumâs poetic prowess, where he sings âSway like the winds, fly like two birds. Thatâs how we move and it feels so goodâ to a lover, on the track âHow We Moveâ.
Calum is heavily influenced by humanity and the experiences of others. âThe World Around Usâ is a slice of 80s pop rock that explores the current state of the world, with âCup Of Urafainâ looking at the political turbulence and global divisiveness.
âThe Manâ is Calumâs first studio album recorded with a live band and came together across a number of years, each track starting life with Calum tracking demos in his home studio before taking them to the band.Itâs this process that gives him the ultimate freedom to be honest and vulnerable, ensuring his music is authentic as it can be. With the studio sessions he made sure to evoke both emotion and fun throughout the recording process and this shines through across the project.
âEach song was written in different moments of time and these musical influences can mirror and enhance your current life experiences.I brought together a band of hand picked musicians who all shared my vision of recording a collection of music unlike anyone has ever experienced, to do things that have never been heard in a world where it feels like it all has been done before.â
Calum first emerged in 2014 and has since been supported by the likes of BBC 6 Music, Radio 2, BBC Scotland, CLOUT, The Otherside Reviews, Louder Than War and more. To celebrate the album release Calum is performing a select set of intimate shows in the UK, which includes a slot at The John Martyn Summer Gathering in June.
